Ian Williams won his forth World Title in 2012 and now he is going for another gold. Sailing Sweden, the official blog of Stena Match Cup Sweden, has talked to the British skipper before the start of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour and Match Race Germany on Wednesday.
Last year Ian Williams managed to defend his title as Champion of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. As we look forward to another exciting season, all the Tour Card holders will be trying to keep Ian Williams behind and he will have to fight harder than ever to keep his spot as the number one match racing skipper in the world.
“Defending the championship is difficult because everyone looks at the team at the top and try to work out how to beat them. It was the same when we were up and coming. Peter Gilmour was that person for us and we actually built a lot of our techniques and strategy on how to beat his team, because if we could beat Gilmour we could also win the Tour. But I wouldn’t say it’s any increased pressure as the reigning champion, if anything it’s the opposite because you have got less to prove”, says Ian Williams who will be spending two weeks at Marstrand this summer, competing in both RC44 Sweden Cup and Stena Match Cup Sweden.
“It’s going to be great to be back at Marstrand. It's as if they announce a new sponsor of the Stena Match Cup every week so it seems like the event is in good health. The regatta goes from strength to strength and we really look forward to coming back and getting a chance to win back the title.”
